Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa to Skip 2024 UN General Assembly

President of Zimbabwe Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa will not be attending this year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA, according to an official press statement released on Friday.

The announcement cited the President’s “dense programme in the last quarter of 2024” as the reason for his absence from the global event.

The President’s statement at the UNGA will instead be delivered by Honourable F.M. Shava, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, who is already in New York to represent Zimbabwe at the Assembly.

The statement, issued by G. Charamba, the Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, read, “In light of a dense programme in the last quarter of 2024, His Excellency the President, Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, will not attend this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. His Statement will be delivered by Hon. F.M. Shava, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade who is already in New York for the Assembly.”
