Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of violating a one-day Easter ceasefire, claiming that Moscow’s forces continued offensive operations across parts of the front line despite President Vladimir Putin’s public declaration of a temporary halt in fighting.
Speaking on social media, Zelensky said, “In general, as of Easter morning, we can say that the Russian army is trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some places it does not abandon individual attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.”
The truce, which Putin announced late on Saturday evening just before attending an Orthodox Easter service, was scheduled to last from 6 p.m. Moscow time (1500 GMT) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. He ordered his military to “stop all military activity” during the specified period along the front line in the ongoing three-year war.
The ceasefire announcement followed warnings from the United States, which said it could withdraw from peace talks unless both Kyiv and Moscow showed genuine commitment to negotiations.
However, Zelensky reported that Ukrainian forces had recorded hundreds of shelling incidents on Saturday evening alone, with an additional 59 shelling instances and five assault attempts by Russian troops logged early Sunday morning.
“Russia must fully comply with the conditions of silence,” Zelensky stated.
He added that Ukraine had offered to extend the ceasefire for 30 days, but insisted that continued Russian aggression would prompt an equal response.
“Ukraine will continue to act in a mirror manner,” he said.
There was no immediate response from the Kremlin regarding the accusations of ongoing attacks.
