The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University is set to unveil a landmark exhibition, themed “Collecting Now: Perspectives on Contemporary Art Collecting in Nigeria,”on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
The exhibition will offer an in-depth look at the personal and curatorial journeys of six leading Nigerian art collectors who have played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary art landscape in the country.
The exhibition will also feature the collections of notable figures such as Prince Yemisi Shyllon, Kola Aina, Gbenga & Aisha Oyebode, Dotun Sulaiman, Adeniyi Adenubi, and Eyamba Dafinone. As key players in the art ecosystem, these collectors have been instrumental in supporting, preserving, and promoting Nigerian art on both a national and international scale.
In a statement, Jess Castellote, Director of the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, emphasised the importance of these collectors, saying,
“Collecting Now isn’t just about displaying beautiful artworks; it’s about exploring the vision and passion of six remarkable collectors. They are not just buyers; they’re patrons and storytellers, playing a vital role in shaping what contemporary Nigerian art looks like today and how it will be remembered tomorrow.”
With over 80 curated works on display, spanning mediums like painting, sculpture, and mixed media, Collecting Now provides visitors a rare glimpse into the varied tastes and collecting philosophies of these individuals.
Their collections not only represent personal interests but also reflect their commitment to preserving cultural heritage and shaping the future of Nigerian art. The exhibition will highlight how their discerning choices have elevated Nigerian art on the international stage.
Also, Kola Aina, Chairman of the YSMA Advisory Board and one of the featured collectors, highlighted the significance of their roles, stating, “The discerning choices of collectors help to preserve our cultural heritage and promote the vibrant expressions of African art.”
The exhibition, running from October 26, 2024, to February 28, 2025, is expected to draw art enthusiasts, scholars, and the general public. The opening reception will take place on October 26 at 2:00pm at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Pan-Atlantic University. Admission is free.
