Xavi Hernández To Stay As Barcelona Head Coach, Reverses Decision To Leave At Season’s End

Barcelona’s Vice President has confirmed Xavi’s decision to remain as head coach, says club never opened talks for his replacement.

Xavi Hernández has decided to stay on as Barcelona football club’s head coach, reversing his decision to leave the team at the end of the season after engaging in talks with the club president, Joan Laporta, and board members on Wednesday.

Barcelona’s vice-president, Rafa Yuste, confirmed Xavi’s decision, as he said that “Xavi will stay, he’s really happy and excited,” stating that talks had never been opened for any other coach and that there is full trust in Xavi’s abilities. Laporta, along with the club, is eager to retain Xavi beyond the summer, pushing for his continued presence at the Camp Nou.

Previously, Xavi had announced his intention to leave after a disappointing home defeat to Villarreal in January, citing the need for a change of direction and expressing frustration over perceived lack of respect and appreciation for his work.

However, his decision to stay comes as a surprise to many, especially considering the team’s recent setbacks, including a controversial loss to Real Madrid in the Clásico.

While the club is expected to make a formal announcement soon, it remains uncertain whether Xavi’s contract will be extended beyond its current end date in June 2025.

Laporta is expected to provide further details during a press conference on Thursday, where the club is likely to make a formal announcement regarding Xavi’s continued tenure as head coach.

Xavi’s initial decision to leave was driven by a perceived need for a “change of direction” at the club and a feeling of underappreciation for his work.

However, Sunday’s loss to Real Madrid, coupled with the team’s Champions League exit, may have prompted a reevaluation of his stance.
