Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman is set to be the centre of attention at the 2024 CAF Awards on Monday evening at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco.
The 26-year-old forward’s exceptional performances over the year make him a strong favourite for the prestigious African Player of the Year title.
Lookman’s stellar contributions include a hat-trick that powered Atalanta FC to UEFA Europa Cup glory in May and a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final earlier this year.
The forward’s record this season, with 11 goals and five assists in 18 matches for Atalanta, including a strike against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, further cements his status as a top contender.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie is also in contention for the Women’s Player of the Year award, building on a remarkable year with Paris FC and the Super Falcons.
Nnadozie played a crucial role in Nigeria’s return to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament after 16 years and remains a fan favourite for her consistent performances.
The evening could also see Nigeria dominate other categories, with nominees across several divisions, including Chiamaka Okwuchukwu for Women’s Young Player of the Year and the Super Eagles and Super Falcons for National Team of the Year honours.
Should Lookman and Nnadozie emerge victorious, it would mark another historic moment for Nigeria, replicating the dual wins of Nwankwo Kanu and Mercy Akide-Udoh in 1999, as well as Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala in 2023.
Nigeria is also vying for accolades in the goalkeeper, coach, and club categories, with Edo Queens among the nominees for Women’s Club of the Year. As the awards night draws closer, hopes remain high for Nigeria to reaffirm its dominance in African football.
