White House: Biden Will Honour Tradition of Peaceful Power Transfer, Will Be Present At Successor’s Inauguration Regardless of Outcome

President Joe Biden will attend the January inauguration of the next US president, regardless of the outcome of next Tuesday’s election, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed on Wednesday.

Her statement underscores Biden’s commitment to upholding the American tradition of a peaceful transfer of power, a principle he considers crucial to democracy.

“This president believes in the peaceful transfer of power, and that’s what you’re going to see this president do,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. “It’s not about him. It’s about the American people. That’s what the American people need to see regardless of who wins.”

She highlighted Biden’s readiness to participate in the inauguration ceremony, noting that outgoing presidents traditionally attend to welcome their successors.

Jean-Pierre’s comments subtly contrasted Biden’s commitment with the decision of former President Donald Trump, who did not attend Biden’s inauguration in January 2021. Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump left the White House before the ceremony, bypassing the customary transition rituals.

Though Trump was absent, his Vice President, Mike Pence, and Second Lady Karen Pence attended the event. This came despite the challenges surrounding the transition, including threats against Pence during the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.

Biden’s presence at the next inauguration aims to reinforce his dedication to democratic traditions, further reassuring Americans that peaceful transitions remain a priority, regardless of political differences.
