The crisis over the zoning of the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for next year’s election has pitched aspirants from Southeast with two governors from the region.

Four PDP presidential aspirants from the South East, namely Peter Obi, Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuabunwa and Nwachukwu Anakwenze, complain that Governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state and his Enugu state counterpart, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, are working against their aspirations. At a meeting of their own in Abuja, the four PDP presidential aspirants from the South East agreed to work together to ensure that one of them emerges the PDP flag bearer. They did not say how they intend to go about it. Anyim, who addressed journalists after the meeting, said the four aspirants have been meeting for some time, hinting that more persons might soon join the race.

Although the PDP has not zoned its presidency to any region despite calls for it to do so, the calls however, have been very loud from the South-east, a region that has not produced any democratically elected executive president since Nigeria’s independence.

Our guest is Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra state and former running mate to Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 general election.
