The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has said that part of his motivation to run for a second term next year is to prevent the return of Donald Trump.
At a campaign fundraiser outside of Boston, Mr. Biden addressed reporters off-camera and stated, “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win.”
The president’s statements were seen as the first time he has publicly connected his hopes for a second term to his opposition to Trump’s effort for a comeback.
Later on Tuesday, Trump made an appearance at a Fox News town hall in Davenport, Iowa.
During the occasion, Trump did not rule out misusing his position of authority should he win a second term in office. The Republican said that he believed Mr. Biden was too elderly to be in a political rematch of this nature.
The host of the event, Sean Hannity, asked Trump, “You are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?”
“Except for day one. I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill,” Trump said in his reply.
Subsequently, Trump expressed his doubt that Mr. Biden would “make it physically” through the demanding campaign that lay ahead.
He claimed that his opponent’s mental state is “possibly equally as bad or even worse” than his physical condition.
As of the now, neither contender is the official nominee of their respective parties.
Despite being the front-runner in the Republican contest, Trump is still facing four felony charges, while Biden, as the current president, is the presumed Democratic nominee.
Current surveys suggest that as the 2024 presidential campaign heats up, there will be a close contest between the two.
On Wednesday, the fourth Republican presidential debate will take place in Alabama, but Trump will not be attending.
