A volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland late Wednesday night, with lava emerging from a fissure. This marks the seventh eruption since December.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office, which monitors seismic activity, reported that the eruption began at 11:14 pm, creating a fissure approximately 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) in length. However, this eruption is considered significantly smaller than the one in August.
While the eruption does not pose a threat to aviation, authorities have issued gas warnings for parts of the peninsula, including the nearby town of Grindavík.
The frequent volcanic eruptions near Grindavík, a town of 3,800 residents located about 50 kilometres (30 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, have caused damage to infrastructure and property, forcing many residents to relocate for their safety.
Authorities have stated that this latest eruption does not pose an additional threat to the town.
