Despite a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt rejecting a challenge by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), on who is responsible for the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT), the FIRS has urged taxpayers, especially in Rivers State, to continue to pay their Value Added Tax (VAT) to it, and warned that defaulters may be asked to pay fines.
Before now, the federal government, through the FIRS, has been in charge of VAT, which it then shares to the federal, state and local governments.
Prominent lawyer Dele Forotimi joined ARISE News Mornimg Show on Wednesday to discuss extensively on the legal battle between the FIRS and the States agitating for control.
According to the lawyer, the FIRS is operating with impunity and has no legal leg to stand on on warning organisations to keep paying VAT to it.
“In a just society, they should all be in jail for contempt of court,” he said.
He beleives the FIRS’ “impunity” is due to perceived support from President Muhammadu Buhari.
