US Surpasses 8 Million Coronavirus Cases

The United States on Friday surpassed 8 million recorded Covid-19 cases- a milestone that comes as daily infection rates are rising.

With deaths at 218,000, the US leads the world in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, followed by India and Brazil.

The country’s one-week average of new daily cases has moved above 53,000 — an increase of more than 55% in just over a month, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. For the first time since late July, the tally of newly reported coronavirus cases surpassed 64,000 on Thursday.

The country’s leading infectious-disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has warned that the number of daily cases is far too high heading into the end of the year.

“You can’t enter into the cool months of the fall, and the cold months of the winter with a high community infection baseline,” Fauci said.

He warned that upcoming holidays may not be a time to hold crowded, indoor dinners because it’s a potentially high-risk activity.
