The Oversight Committee, the main investigative board of the US House of Representatives, has summoned US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing on 22 July regarding the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The attempt occurred during a political campaign rally on Saturday.
In a statement on social media, the panel said, “Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump.”
Republican Representative James Comer of Kentucky, chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, stated that he has already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and is calling on Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. “There are many questions and Americans demand answers,” Comer emphasised.
Earlier, FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek noted that it was “surprising” the gunman managed to open fire on stage before being neutralised by the Secret Service. When asked about a potential security failure, Rojek declined to make an assessment during the active investigation.
The Secret Service did not participate in the news conference.
Allies of Trump have also raised concerns about legislation that might remove his Secret Service protection, questioning why his opponents would want to increase the danger to his life.
