A Nigerian-American Esther Agbaje has won an election in the US to represent District 59B in the Minnesota House of Representatives on the platform of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, an affiliate of the US Democratic Party.
She won by a landslide, scoring a total of 17,396 votes, which represents 74.7% of the total ballots cast.
The 35-year-old Ms. Agbaje is the daughter of an Episcopal priest and a librarian, both Nigerian immigrants, and defeated Republican Alan Shilepsky and Green Party candidate Lisa Neal-Delgado to represent downtown and north Minneapolis in the state House.
She was born in St. Paul, the state capital of Minnesota, and attended George Washington University, DC, with a first degree in political science.
She also holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Pennsylvania, and a law degree from Harvard University.
