Germany has arrested a US citizen on suspicion of attempting to pass sensitive US military intelligence to China, the federal prosecutor’s office announced Thursday.
The man, identified only as Martin D. due to privacy laws, allegedly approached Chinese officials this year, offering classified information he had obtained while working for US forces stationed in Germany.
According to prosecutors, Martin D. recently worked with the US military and allegedly reached out to Chinese state entities, proposing to share intelligence with Chinese officials. His actions have raised serious concerns amid Germany’s heightened vigilance over potential espionage threats from Beijing.
This case is one of several recent espionage incidents involving China in Germany. In April, German authorities arrested three citizens suspected of supplying sensitive technology to aid China’s naval capabilities. Additionally, an EU staffer associated with a far-right politician was detained over alleged ties to Chinese intelligence.
Germany has warned of increased espionage risks and has intensified its scrutiny over possible spy activities within the country, particularly those linked to Chinese intelligence efforts. This latest arrest underscores the growing tensions around security and intelligence vulnerabilities in Europe.
