UNSC Warns Israel Against Dismantling UNRWA Operations Following New Legislation Banning Agency Activities

The United Nations Security Council issued a strong warning on Wednesday against any efforts to dismantle or undermine the operations and mandate of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, following Israel’s recent enactment of a law prohibiting its activities.

In a statement reached by consensus, the 15-member council expressed serious concern regarding the legislation passed by the Israeli parliament on Monday. The council emphasised the critical role that UNRWA plays in providing essential services and support to Palestinian refugees.

The Security Council urged the Israeli government to adhere to its international obligations and to respect the privileges and immunities of UNRWA. Furthermore, it called on Israel to fulfil its responsibilities to facilitate “full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian assistance” throughout the Gaza Strip.

This warning underscores the international community’s commitment to the humanitarian needs of Palestinians, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the region. The Security Council’s statement highlights the necessity of protecting humanitarian operations and ensuring that aid reaches those in need, amidst the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
