The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with AFS Vocational Hub, has launched a training initiative aimed at empowering 200 youths and women in renewable energy systems.
The training is part of the Comprehensive Vocational Training in Renewable Solar Energy Systems (VTRES) programme, which seeks to address unemployment and support Nigeria’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
AFS Vocational Hub Programme Manager, Ndueso Eno, explained that the initiative is part of efforts to combat unemployment and promote the adoption of clean energy technologies. He highlighted that while the programme will ultimately benefit 1,000 participants, the first 200 are currently undergoing training in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, covering areas such as design, installation, operation, and maintenance.
The programme, which officially began on October 7, 2024, runs for eight weeks at AFS Vocational Hub and integrates solar PV training with entrepreneurship, soft skills, and digital marketing, aiming to foster economic inclusion.
UNDP National Programme Specialist Lady Clare Henshaw stressed the importance of the initiative, pointing out that it aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). She noted that this training is key to empowering unemployed and underemployed individuals, especially women and persons with disabilities, equipping them with vital skills to participate in the renewable energy sector.
“This training is a vital step towards achieving sustainable development in Nigeria. By empowering youths and women with practical skills in renewable energy, we are not only tackling unemployment but also driving the nation’s transition to clean and sustainable energy solutions,” Henshaw said.
Babafemi Oladosu, Managing Partner at AFS Vocational Hub, expressed pride in the collaboration with UNDP Nigeria. He added that the provision of startup packs to participants ensures they can immediately apply their new skills and begin building careers in the renewable energy sector.
