Several news sources are reporting that popular Ugandan presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also called Bobi Wine, has sent his wife and children abroad ahead of next week’s election.
He reportedly made the decision because he’d been warned they were a target:
“I received credible information of pending physical attacks on my wife and kidnap of our children,” he was quoted by the Daily Monitor newspaper as saying.
The opposition politician was quoted as saying friends living outside the country had offered to host his family for their safety.
Photos purporting to show his family at the airport were shared on social media late on Thursday.
Mr Kyagulanyi’s bodyguard was killed last month when he was run over by a vehicle belonging to the military police.
The convoy of another presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat, was fired at with live bullets.
