Two Found Guilty over Kenya’s Westgate Shopping Mall Attack

A court in Kenya has found two men guilty of helping Islamist militants attack a shopping mall in 2013. Militants burst into the luxury Westgate shopping centre in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, hurling grenades and starting a days-long siege that left 67 people dead.

The state said the four militants who carried out the attack were found dead in the shopping centre’s rubble. Three suspects, Hussein Hassann Mustafah, Liban Abdullah Omar and Mohammed Ahmed were charged with aiding the gunmen involved in the attack.

Only two were found guilty- the third was acquitted of all counts of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act.

The assault on Westgate Mall horrified the world and exposed weaknesses in Kenya’s security forces after it took them hours to respond.

The Somali Islamic extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. Since 2011 the rebel group, which is linked to al-Qaida, has vowed retribution on Kenya for sending troops to Somalia.
