Two employees of the Britain-based aid agency Tearfund were killed in an attack on their convoy in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the charity announced on Monday. The workers were traveling by road from the town of Lubero to Butembo city in the conflict-torn North Kivu province when they were attacked upon arrival on Sunday. Tearfund did not provide further details about the incident.
North Kivu has been plagued by violence, with numerous armed groups vying for control and resources in the mineral-rich region. The province has faced an escalating insurgency for more than two years, increasing a long-standing humanitarian crisis that has displaced over 2.7 million people.
Local administrator Alain Kiwewa confirmed the convoy attack, noting that five of its vehicles were burned. However, did not specify which group was responsible for the attack.
