Trump, Putin Hold Phone Call Following Rising Tensions Over Sanctions and Global Assets

Trump and Putin are engaged in a phone call about global assets, which the White House says is “going well.”

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are currently engaged in a phone call that is “going well,” according to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino.

This marks the second publicly known conversation between the two leaders since Trump returned to office in January.

Speaking ahead of the call, Trump indicated that key topics on the agenda included discussions about “land,” “power plants,” and the “division of certain assets.”

While he did not provide specifics, the remarks have fueled speculation about potential negotiations over geopolitical disputes, energy infrastructure, or economic agreements between the two nations.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Putin delivered a speech at a meeting of Russian industrialists and entrepreneurs in Moscow, where he strongly criticised Western sanctions on Russia.

The Kremlin leader accused the West of attempting to stifle Russia’s economic growth and reiterated his commitment to strengthening the country’s industries despite international restrictions.

The phone call comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow, with the US maintaining its sanctions regime against Russia, while also facing diplomatic challenges in managing relations with its long-time adversary.

Neither government has yet provided an official readout of the call, but analysts will be closely watching for any indications of shifts in US-Russia relations following this latest high-level engagement.
