Trump Chooses Ex-Bank President As Latin America Envoy Despite Alleged Affair Scandal

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he intends to nominate Mauricio Claver-Carone as his special envoy to Latin America. Claver-Carone, a key figure during Trump’s first term in office from 2017 to 2021, is expected to focus on addressing migration and drug-smuggling challenges in the region.

“Mauricio knows the region and how to put America’s interests FIRST,” Trump stated on social media, expressing confidence in Claver-Carone’s expertise and ability to advance US priorities in Latin America.

Claver-Carone’s appointment comes with a clouded history. In 2022, he was dismissed as president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) following an investigation that alleged he had an affair with a subordinate, a claim he has consistently denied. The investigation also highlighted accusations of creating a hostile work environment during his tenure.

Despite the controversy, Claver-Carone holds the distinction of being the first American to lead the IDB, a position traditionally influenced by Latin American powerhouses like Argentina and Brazil. While at the helm, he sought to shift the bank’s focus, granting smaller nations a greater voice in its operations and diminishing the dominance of larger member states. His experience in the region and at the IDB positions him as a strategic choice, albeit one with baggage.

The appointment may spark debate over Claver-Carone’s controversial past, but whether Claver-Carone’s leadership will deliver the results Trump envisions remains to be seen.
