US President Donald Trump kicked off a final election week with a multi-state campaign across the country with stops in the Midwestern states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska on Tuesday.
n a wide-ranging, hour-long speech at the Capital Region International Airport in Lansing, Michigan, the Republican incumbent connected surges in COVID-19 cases to increased testing for the virus and highlighted trade policy.
The president told the thousands that gathered that “seven days from now we’re going to win the great state of Michigan.” He narrowly won the state four years ago by 10,704 votes, or two-tenths of a percentage point.
“Once again, Michigan is going to answer the call of history and show the world that sleepy Joe Biden, his dark money donors and his corrupt special interests. And by the way, there’s never been anything like this.”
Trump warned the crowd against voting for his rival, saying that a Biden win would mean “the biggest tax increase in history.”
“If he gets in, he’s going to raise your taxes at a level that nobody’s ever seen. He is the first candidate I’ve ever seen who is running on a promise that I will raise your taxes. I’ve never heard that one. I’ve been involved and followed and studied politics for a long time. He’ll be the first one,” Trump said.
At one point, the president described the election as a choice between a “Trump boom” and a “Biden lockdown,” referring to Biden and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You’re already locked down,” Trump said as the crowd of thousands of people began chanting “Lock her up,” at Michigan Democrat governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The president repeated the same Biden attacks and focused talks on immigration, trade and his handling of the pandemic at his next rallies in West Salem, Wisconsin, and Ohama, Nebraska.
Warning against a Biden victory, Trump said: “If Biden wins, China wins. China will own the USA, and they don’t want me to win.”
“When we win, you win, Wisconsin wins, that’s what will happen,” he told the Wisconsin crowd to cheers.
Meanwhile, first lady Melania Trump made her first solo campaign appearance since her diagnosis with a stop in southern Pennsylvania.
Speaking in Atglen, a small community east of Lancaster, she said she experienced the effects of COVID-19, not just as a patient, “but as a worried mother and wife.”
She then blasted Joe Biden’s “socialist agenda,” and accused Democrats of wasting taxpayers’ dollars on a “sham” impeachment.
“This sham was led by opposition and their display of hatred is on display to this day,” she said. “Children watching and learning about politics in our country deserve a better display of political responsibility.”
She also defended her husband over his response to the pandemic.
“The American people can look at Joe’s Biden’s 36 years in Congress and eight years in the vice presidency and determine whether they think he will finally be able to get something done for the American people.”
