U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has selected Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as the presidential envoy for special missions.
Grenell, a seasoned diplomat and Trump loyalist, is expected to lead U.S. engagement in some of the world’s most contentious regions, including North Korea, Venezuela, and the Balkans.
“Ric will work in some of the hottest spots around the world, including Venezuela and North Korea,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform, without elaborating further on Grenell’s specific duties.
Grenell has an extensive history of high-level diplomatic roles. During Trump’s previous term in office (2017–2021), he served as U.S. ambassador to Germany, special envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations, and acting director of national intelligence.
Known for his hardline approach, Grenell was a key figure in U.S. foreign policy and a trusted ally of Trump. Despite being a top contender for secretary of state, that role went to U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Grenell was also reportedly considered for special envoy for the Ukraine war, a role ultimately filled by retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg.
As presidential envoy, Grenell’s portfolio will include addressing long-standing tensions with U.S. adversaries.
North Korea: Trump has expressed interest in pursuing direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a stark contrast to President Biden’s approach, which was largely ignored by Pyongyang. However, with North Korea’s expanding missile capabilities and closer ties to Russia, the path to dialogue remains uncertain.
Venezuela: Trump previously labeled Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro a “dictator” and imposed severe sanctions targeting the country’s oil industry. Maduro severed diplomatic relations with the U.S. in 2019 but recently referred to Trump’s re-election as a potential “new start” for bilateral relations. Grenell’s past involvement in Venezuela includes a secret 2020 meeting with a Maduro representative to negotiate a peaceful transition of power—an effort that ultimately fell through.
Balkans: A Trump transition source revealed that Grenell will also focus on the volatile Balkans, where he previously worked to broker peace between Serbia and Kosovo.
Republican Senator Bill Hagerty praised Grenell’s appointment, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “Ric will do a great job dealing with some of the world’s toughest challenges.”
As Trump prepares to assume office next month, Grenell’s role underscores the president-elect’s focus on direct, high-stakes diplomacy. His appointment signals an aggressive approach to addressing some of the most complex geopolitical issues facing the United States. Whether Grenell’s tactics will yield results in these global hotspots remains to be seen.
