Tropical Storm Helene has emerged in the Caribbean Sea and is forecasted to intensify into a significant hurricane as it moves northward towards the United States.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, hurricane watches are now in effect for regions in Cuba, Mexico, and parts of Florida’s coastline, including Tampa Bay.

She stated that individuals residing in areas under watches and warnings should anticipate the loss of electricity and ensure that they have an adequate supply of food and water for a minimum of three days.

Hurricane Specialist at the centre, Lisa Bucci, stated, “Now is the time to start preparing. If you’re in an evacuation zone, you should evacuate.

“Don’t be fooled by the way the storm looks at the moment. We are expecting it to rapidly intensify.”

Currently, the storm is positioned 170 miles (275 kilometres) southeast of the western tip of Cuba, with sustained winds reaching 45 mph (75 kph). It is anticipated to strengthen into Hurricane Helene by Wednesday as it nears the Gulf Coast, the Associated Press reports.
