Tinubu Mourns Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Hails Nigeria-India Partnership Legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday at the age of 92.

In his tribute, which was shared in a press statement released on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged Singh’s historic contributions to Nigeria-India relations, highlighting his 2007 official visit to Nigeria, during which Singh addressed a joint session of the National Assembly—a rare honour accorded to only a select few global leaders.

Tinubu stated that Singh’s dedication to strengthening the Nigeria-India relationship remains a reference point in the history of the two nations’ ties.

The President lauded Singh’s leadership during the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India, which continues to promote political and economic prosperity for both nations.

He also commended Singh’s efforts in advancing cooperation in defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT, which have significantly bolstered ties between the two countries.

Recognising Singh’s global impact, President Tinubu praised his role in steering India’s economic reforms during challenging global times, describing him as a selfless leader and distinguished economist.

As the people of India celebrate the life and legacy of the late Prime Minister, Tinubu expressed hope that Singh’s dedication to service would inspire future generations.

The President concluded his message by praying for strength for the people of India as they mourn a leader whose influence extended far beyond his nation’s borders.
