The Supplementary budget submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requesting the allocation of over 7.3billion Naira for the procurement of cars for the presidential villa as well as an additional 13.5billion Naira for renovations continues to generate reactions A further breakdown of the 2.17 trillion Naira supplementary budget submitted to the National Assembly on Monday, revealed that the federal government earmarked N12.7 billion Naira for the presidential air fleet and intends to spend N5 billion Naira for the purchase of a presidential yacht. ‘
The proposed sum is under the capital expenditure of the Nigerian Navy’s budget. Additionally, the navy will require N62.8 billion Naira for its operations.
The government however earmarked a total of N5.5 billion Naira for the Education Loan Fund under the Student Loan Act eliciting outrage among many Nigerians. In the midst of the Outrage over the supplementary budget proposal of 2.17 trillion Naira, Some aggrieved Nigerians marched through the streets of Ogun State on Wednesday to protest the soaring cost of living.
The protesters called on the federal government to improve on their current social welfare interventions saying that the incentives were not enough. The House of Representatives has summoned the minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, to provide details of the process and criteria used to select the 15 million households who will be beneficiaries of the N1.1 trillion Naira Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme. The summons followed the adoption of a motion by PDP lawmaker from Osun State, Moruf Adebayo on Tuesday.
The lawmaker called for transparency, stating that there have been concerns about corruption and fraud in previous conditional cash transfer programmes where funds intended for vulnerable people were misappropriated by individuals. In Kenya, Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla began their second day of a state visit to the country on Wednesday.
