TikTok has announced the launch of the second phase of its #SaferTogether digital safety and awareness programme in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Data Science Nigeria (DSN).
The initiative, which was announced in a press release, aims to empower parents, teachers, and guardians with tools to guide young users safely through the digital space, and will extend its reach to more regions, including Edo and Kaduna.
The #SaferTogether programme, which first launched in 2022, has already made a significant impact by educating 1,574 key stakeholders across major cities like Abuja, Lagos, and Kano. Phase 1 specifically focused on equipping 537 teachers and 1,037 parents with knowledge about TikTok’s safety features and how to promote positive mental health in the digital environment.
With the successful outcomes of Phase 1, TikTok has expanded the scope of its efforts in Phase 2, which will now include deeper engagement with a broader audience. “We believe that empowering parents, teachers, and guardians with digital literacy skills is not just about protecting users—it is about enabling an informed community to actively shape a safer digital environment for everyone,” said Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok’s Government Relations and Public Policy Director for Africa.
The new phase of the programme will cover crucial topics such as misinformation, cyberbullying, sexting, digital citizenship, and data protection, targeting a wider audience, including civil society organizations, government representatives, community leaders, and local residents. As part of its commitment to online safety, TikTok has partnered with NITDA to strengthen the educational component of the initiative.
Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, Founder and CEO of Data Science Nigeria, echoed similar sentiments, noting the shared responsibility in creating a safer digital world. “We have a shared responsibility to make this space safer, and we are excited to continue with the Safer Together campaign, providing parents, teachers, and guardians with essential insights on digital wellness,” said Adekanmbi.
The collaboration also provides practical resources for parents and guardians through TikTok’s Safety Centre, offering updated best practices on digital safety. The second phase is set to reach even more regions, creating a national dialogue on safeguarding young users from the risks of the digital world.
