In a rare act of violence in Lisbon, three people were shot and killed by unidentified assailants in broad daylight on Wednesday. The victims, two men and a woman, were attacked in the working-class neighborhood of Penha de França. Local authorities reported that the suspects, three men, fled the scene on foot, and the motive remains unclear.
“I can confirm that three people were shot and killed and the suspects, three men, fled,” a police source said, adding that it was too early to say what the motive for the killings was. Several local media said two of the victims had died from head wounds, suggesting an execution-style hit.
While Portugal is known as one of the world’s safest countries and ranks as the 7th most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index,
violent crime has been on the rise. Last year, violent crime in the country increased by 5.6%, from 2022 levels to 14,022 cases, with over a third of the incidents occurring in the Lisbon area.
