The Nembe Oil Spill Needs an Independent Panel of Inquiry – Prof. Richard Steiner

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva, Wednesday paid his first visit to the site of the Nembe oil spill in Bayelsa State, more than three weeks after a blowout occurred at a wellhead in the Santa Barbara oilfield.

Sylva, a former governor of the state, was accompanied on the visit by the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe.

The minister assured residents of the area that the authorities were working round the clock to contain the spill and restore the environment.

Prof Richard Steiner enlightens us on why blowouts of this nature occur, preventative measures to stop them from recurring, and the remedial measures needed to restore the environment.

Prof. Steiner is a marine conservationist and has extensive experience working around the world, including in Ogoni land, on oil spill containment and environmental conservation.

Last week, he was appointed as the Technical Adviser to the Ijaw Diaspora Council to assess and advise Nembe communities on the oil spill.
