Tanzanian authorities have launched an investigation into individuals spreading false information about Vice-President Philip Mpango’s health on social media. Mr. Mpango reappeared in public on Sunday after being absent for over a month, dispelling rumours of his death that had circulated widely. Information Minister Nape Nnauye has ordered an inquiry into those responsible for the speculation.
Vice-President Mpango, who was last seen in public on October 31 during a virtual meeting of the Southern African Development Community, appeared at a Sunday service in Dodoma, where he assured the public of his good health. The absence had sparked concerns, with Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa cautioning against engaging in baseless speculation.
Addressing the congregation, Mr. Mpango expressed disappointment over false rumours and images circulating on social media. “There have been photos circulating alongside a candle, and claims that I have passed away. It’s too early – I haven’t completed the job God sent me to do,” he stated. He attributed his absence to “special duties” abroad, providing no further details.
Responding to the situation, Information Minister Nnauye urged relevant state agencies to take action against those responsible for spreading the false information. He emphasised the need for responsible use of social media and stated that any freedom that infringes on another person’s freedom amounts to disobedience of the law.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who met with Vice-President Mpango on Sunday at Chamwino State House, reminded him of his public figure status and the inevitability of facing such speculations. This is not the first time false rumours have circulated about Mr. Mpango’s health, as he revealed that his sister had fainted in 2021 due to similar misinformation.
The investigation seeks to identify and take action against those responsible for spreading false information, emphasising the importance of responsible online behaviour and adherence to the law.
