Nigeria reignited their 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes with a commanding 2-0 win over Rwanda on Friday night, marking a triumphant debut for new head coach Eric Chelle.
Victor Osimhen was the star of the night, netting both goals in the first half to secure Nigeria’s first win in the qualification series. The in-form striker, who has been in sensational form for Galatasaray this season, opened the scoring with a precise side-footed finish after meeting Ademola Lookman’s well-placed free-kick.
Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead in style, capitalising on a defensive error at the halfway line before skillfully chipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. His brace ensured the Super Eagles took full control of the match, leaving Rwanda with little room for a comeback.
The victory propels Nigeria to third place in Group C, following South Africa’s 2-0 triumph over Lesotho earlier in the day. With momentum on their side, the Super eagles will now turn their focus to their next fixture against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
