Jose Peseiro, in a post on his X page, has officially announced his departure from the role of head coach of the Super Eagles, on Friday.
The Portuguese coach revealed that his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had concluded, and no new agreement had been reached.
Appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles in 2022, Peseiro reflected on his tenure, describing it as “22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm.”
Expressing gratitude to the players and the leadership at the NFF, Peseiro affirmed their ongoing support, stating, “we will always be there for you, no matter where you are.”
In his tweet, Peseiro conveyed, “Yesterday (Thursday) we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment.”
Acknowledging key figures at the NFF, Peseiro thanked Sir Amaju Pinnick, President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, and the entire NFF staff.
He also expressed his special appreciation to the players, describing leading them as “a great pleasure.”
Peseiro’s tenure culminated in Nigeria’s second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where the team lost 2-1 to the hosts in the final.
Despite the achievement, criticism emerged from fans who were unconvinced by Peseiro’s tactical approach, which often prioritized defensive organization over attacking creativity.
The coach and members of the squad received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) for their efforts in AFCON.
President Bola Tinubu also awarded Peseiro and team members with plots of land and flats in the federal capital territory (FCT) as a gesture of recognition. As Peseiro bids farewell, the search for a new head coach for the Super Eagles begins, marking a new chapter for Nigerian football.
