Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a village in Gezira State on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 people, according to local activists. This incident marks the latest in a series of RSF assaults on small villages in the farming state since the group seized control of the capital, Wad Madani, in December.
The pro-democracy Wad Madani Resistance Committee reported on social media that Wad Alnoura village experienced a “genocide” on Wednesday, after being attacked twice by the RSF, with casualties potentially reaching into the hundreds. The committee also noted that the Sudanese army ignored calls for assistance.
“The people of Wad Alnoura called on the army to rescue them, but they shamefully did not respond,” the committee said.
The RSF began clashing with the Sudanese army in April 2023 following disagreements over the integration of the two forces. Since then, the RSF has captured the capital Khartoum and most of western Sudan and is now advancing into central regions. United Nations agencies have warned that Sudan is at “imminent risk of famine.”
In a statement on Wednesday, the RSF confirmed attacks on army and allied militia bases around Wad Alnoura but did not acknowledge any civilian casualties. The Wad Madani Resistance Committee, however, accused the RSF of using heavy artillery against civilians, looting, and forcing women and children to flee to the nearby town of Managil. The committee shared photos depicting dozens of bodies wrapped i preparation for burial, surrounded by large crowds of men.
The army-aligned Transitional Sovereign Council condemned the attack, labeling it as a “criminal act” reflecting the systematic targeting of civilians by the RSF.
