The Sudanese army has claimed that nine people, including four soldiers, were killed Sunday evening when a civilian airliner crashed in Sudan for “technical” reasons, as the country’s conflict approached its 100th day.
The violence has locked millions of people in their houses, with some going without water, notably in Khartoum’s outskirts, where families are pleading for food supplies to help them survive.
In a statement by the Sudanese army, it was stated that, “A civilian Antonov plane today crashed at Port Sudan Airport as a result of a technical failure, leading to the deaths of nine people, including four military personnel. One child survived the crash.”
According to a conservative estimate, the war has killed at least 3,000 people in Sudan.
Port Sudan in the Red Sea state, located on the country’s eastern coast, is one of the cities under the hands of the Sudanese army since the conflict began.
The sole airport in the country lies in Port Sudan, making the city a key transit point for much-needed foreign aid.
