Sudan: Evacuating Nigerians Earlier Than Wednesday Would Have Been Risky, Onyeama Says

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, said it was safer for evacuation to started Wednesday morning and not earlier so as to ensure the security of Nigerians in Sudan.

According to Onyeama  “For us the security of Nigerians was a priority, we didn’t want to take any unnecessary risk. Especially after a French convoy was attacked as they were embarking on a similar journey.”

He further made boldly the assertion that the evacuation has started and he thinks “It is very heartening.”

The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) has secured 40 buses from an undisclosed transport company for $1.2 million on Tuesday with a promise that evacuation of Nigerians stranded in Khartoum and other cities of Sudan will begin on Wednesday.

The evacuation started Wednesday morning and over 5,500 Nigerians are expected to arrive Cairo in Egypt.

Statistically, Sudan has the highest number of Nigerians in the diaspora than any other country in the world.

Following the conflict that broke out on the 15th of April in Sudan’s capital city, Nigerians have made media rounds seeking the government’s intervention as governments of other countries had begun evacuating their citizens from Sudan.
