Stakeholders to Discuss Food Poisoning in Nigeria

A three-day expert workshop, starting June 5, will bring together top professionals in the food and healthcare sectors, government officials, and key stakeholders to share expertise and best practices in preventing and controlling foodborne illnesses.

Organized by Regina Akume, Chairman of the House Committee on Food and Drug Administration and Control, in partnership with Benson Coleman and Associates Ltd, the workshop seeks to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of food poisoning and identify effective strategies for enhancing food safety and quality.

The Committee Chairman described the workshop as critical to Nigeria’s efforts at ensuring food safety for its citizens. Poor food preparation and preservation, dangerous chemicals, harmful practices by food vendors, poor hygiene and sanitation, contaminated food and water, and inadequate food regulation and enforcement are among the main causes of food poisoning, which claims over 200,000 Nigerian lives annually, according to NAFDAC.

The workshop, to be held at the IBOM ICON HOTEL in Uyo, will feature expert presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, marking a crucial step towards addressing the critical issue of food poisoning in Nigeria and ensuring safe and quality food for all citizens.
