South Africa’s President Ramaphosa To Sign National Health Insurance Bill

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is poised to sign a landmark national health bill on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards ensuring comprehensive health coverage for all citizens, as confirmed by the country’s presidency.

The bill, which enjoys widespread support among voters, comes on the eve of the May 29 national election, presenting a critical test for the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

The bill which cost billions, received parliamentary approval last year and will be implemented gradually over time. Its overarching goal is to transform the healthcare system, tackling entrenched racial and social inequalities that have persisted since the end of apartheid.

However, it has encountered opposition from business groups concerned about potential disinvestment and economic repercussions.

Despite the signing of the bill, experts doubt immediate changes to the healthcare landscape, reflecting the complexity of the reforms outlined in the legislation.
