South Africa’s Mia le Roux Withdraws from Miss Universe Finals Due To Health Concerns

Miss South Africa, Mia le Roux has withdrawn from the 73rd Miss Universe finals due to health concerns.

Mia le Roux, South Africa’s trailblazing beauty queen, has withdrawn from the Miss Universe finals in Mexico due to health concerns. The 28-year-old, who made history in August as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, was set to compete among 120 contestants at the prestigious 73rd Miss Universe pageant this weekend.

The Miss South Africa organisation announced the decision, emphasising that Le Roux’s health and well-being “are our utmost priority.” In a statement, Le Roux described the decision as “incredibly challenging,” acknowledging the dreams and expectations surrounding her journey.

“Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” she said. “However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”

Le Roux, who spent weeks in Mexico preparing for the competition, did not disclose the nature of her health condition. The Miss South Africa organisation praised her “incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period” and pledged continued support during her recovery.

Her withdrawal marks a significant loss for South Africa, leaving the nation unrepresented at this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

Le Roux’s journey to the crown was nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one, she received a cochlear implant that enabled her to perceive sound. After two years of speech therapy, she said her first words, overcoming significant challenges to reach where she is today.

In a previous interview, she expressed her excitement about representing South Africa, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to amplify her voice and showcase her country’s “beautiful diversity.” Despite her withdrawal, her story continues to inspire many, highlighting resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

As Le Roux steps away to focus on her health, the Miss South Africa organisation and her supporters have rallied around her, expressing hope for her swift recovery. “Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” the organisation said.
