South Africa To Launch Presidency of G20, Prioritising Africa’s Development

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa will formally launch the nation’s presidency of the G20 at Parliament on Tuesday. The leadership baton was passed to South Africa by Brazil’s President Lula da Silva during last month’s G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

This marks a significant moment for South Africa, offering an opportunity to shape global policies while championing Africa’s development and addressing key issues such as poverty and unemployment.

Operating under the theme “Fostering Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainable Development”, South Africa aims to ensure that the continent’s aspirations are central to the global agenda.

Speaking at the Cape Town Conversation hosted by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation last week, Deputy President Paul Mashatile highlighted South Africa’s commitment to using the presidency to prioritise Africa’s development.

The country also plans to establish a platform that reflects the needs and challenges of the Global South, strengthening its voice in international deliberations.
