South Africa To Elect President, Parliament Speaker On Friday

South Africa’s Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, has announced that the next president of South Africa and the speaker of the National Assembly will be elected on Friday, 14 June.

The election will take place at 10:00 AM in the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The National Assembly session will include the swearing-in of 400 Members of Parliament. According to the South African Constitution, a president must be elected within 14 days of the declaration of election results.

In addition, Members of the National Council of Provinces will be sworn in on Saturday, 15 June.

This comes after South Africa’s longest ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) experienced its worst election showing since coming to power 30 years ago, receiving 40.2% of the vote, down from 57.5% in 2019. The Democratic Alliance (DA) secured 21.6%, while uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), led by former President Jacob Zuma, garnered 14.7%, drawing support away from the ANC.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and other senior officials of the ANC convened in a pivotal meeting to determine whether to formally propose a “unity” government.

This government would encompass all major parties to address a political impasse in the country’s most industrialised nation before the 16 June deadline.
