Simone Ehivet Secures Party Nomination for Ivory Coast Presidency

Simone Ehivet, ex-wife of Laurent Gbagbo, has announced presidential bid with focus on reconciliation and development.

The newest candidate in the political arena is Simone Ehivet, the ex-wife of former President Laurent Gbagbo.

Simone Ehivet secured the nomination from her party, the Movement of Capable Generations (MGC), at a congress held in her hometown of Moossou, located in the southeastern part of Ivory Coast.

In her acceptance speech, Ehivet outlined her key priorities, which include national reconciliation through amnesty, achieving food sovereignty, and promoting industrialisation.

Laurent Gbagbo and Simone divorced in June 2023, ending their 34-year marriage and long history of activism together.

A professional teacher, Ehivet began her activism career as a trade unionist in the 1970s. Her political influence grew significantly after meeting Gbagbo in 1973.

The pair co-founded the Popular Ivorian Front in 1982, aiming to challenge the rule of Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

Following Gbagbo’s imprisonment for war crimes, the party was taken over by Pascal Affi N’Guessan, who has also declared his candidacy for the 2025 election.
