Seychelles has declared a state of emergency following a massive explosion at an industrial zone on the main island, Mahé, coupled with severe flooding. President Wavel Ramkalawan has issued a directive for all citizens, excluding essential workers, to stay at home as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the catastrophe.
The explosion, which occurred at a construction and quarrying company storing explosives in the Providence industrial area, has left numerous individuals injured and caused extensive damage to the surrounding regions. The incident has prompted a significant response from emergency personnel.
Despite the industrial zone being situated in Providence, the blast’s impact reached the international airport, located 4km (2.5 miles) away. The airport sustained damage, adding to the challenges faced by authorities in managing the crisis. As a precautionary measure, schools have been closed, and movement is restricted to and from the holiday islands.
Preliminary reports suggest that approximately 100 people were injured in the explosion, with the exact cause yet to be determined. Officials have urged residents to remain at home, with exceptions only for those engaged in essential services and individuals with scheduled flights.
The state of emergency underscores the severity of the situation, with concerns about further disruptions to transportation and business operations. Evacuations and road closures are anticipated as emergency personnel work to assess and address the aftermath of the explosion and flooding.
As Seychelles navigates through this crisis, the international community closely monitors developments, awaiting more information on the extent of the damage and the ongoing efforts to manage the fallout from this tragic event.
