Senegal Reports 78 Positive Covid-19 Cases from Hajj Returnees

Senegal detected Covid-19 in 78 people returning from Hajj pilgrim at Dakar’s airport. Masks and self-isolation was advised.

Senegal has reported detecting Covid-19 among numerous pilgrims returning from their Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. At Dakar’s Blaise Diagne International Airport, testing revealed 78 positive Covid-19 cases.

According to Senegal’s health ministry, these results were anticipated, as returning pilgrims had been advised to wear masks and self-isolate.

Authorities have increased monitoring efforts in response.

Saudi officials announced on Sunday that over 1,300 individuals died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, attributing the deaths to extremely high summer temperatures.

Events like the symbolic stoning of the pillars see large crowds gathering in close proximity, with no room for social distancing, leading to deadly stampedes in the past.

In 2024, more than 1.83 million Muslims participated in Hajj, with Senegal contributing 12,900 pilgrims.
