Senate President Akpabio Issues Public Apology to Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti Over ‘Nightclub’ Comments

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly apologised to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, following controversial comments made last week.

During a Senate session, Akpabio had told Akpoti-Uduaghan that she spoke as if she were in a “night club,” after she spoke without prior recognition.

The apology comes amidst heightened scrutiny of Akpabio’s treatment of female senators.

Recently, Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Federal Capital Territory had also faced dismissal when protesting her exclusion from discussions concerning the capital’s affairs.

Addressing the Senate on Tuesday, Akpabio expressed regret, stating, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman. I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasaha, I want to apologise to you.”

He mentioned receiving numerous calls and messages, including insults, both to his and his wife’s phones.

Akpabio further commented on social media reactions, suggesting that the intensity of online criticism indicates a broader issue.

“The interest shown In the social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm. People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward.”

He also refuted claims circulating on social media about his personal life, stating, “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”

The apology follows recent criticism from the Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW), which had condemned Akpabio for alleged disrespect towards female senators.
