Security Committee Bans Protest in Nigeria’s Capital

A security committee of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has placed a ban on all #EndSARS street demonstrations, protests, and processions anywhere within the nation’s capital Abuja, saying the “unruly conduct of the crowd and manner of demonstrations are in complete violation of the COVID-19 safety protocols.

Nigerians have been on the streets for several days protesting police brutality, killings of peaceful protesters and have called for an end to the police unit Special Anti-robbery Squad. But despite the dissolution of the controversial unit demonstrations have continued.

Anthony Ogunleye, the Chief Press Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration in a statement said “the continued violations of the coronavirus safety protocols endanger the lives of not just the demonstrators but other Nigerians going about their legitimate activities.”

“Consequently, the committee directs that due to the dangers posed by the COVID-19  all street demonstrations, protests and processions will not be allowed anywhere within the FCT,” he said.
