School Shooting By 15-Year-Old Leaves Two Dead, Six Injured At Christian School

A 15-year-old student opened fire at a Wisconsin school, killing two and injuring six before dying .

In a heartbreaking incident on Monday, a 15-year-old student opened fire at “Abundant Life Christian School” in Madison, Wisconsin, killing a teacher and a teenage student while injuring six others.

Authorities identified the attacker as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha. Police believe she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though official autopsy results are pending.

The shooting occurred at around 11:00 AM local time in a study hall where students from mixed grades were present. Madison Police Chief, Shon Barnes confirmed that Rupnow attended classes earlier in the day before carrying out the attack. A second-grade student was the first to call in the active shooter report, a chilling detail underscoring the gravity of the situation.

“Today is a sad day—not just for Madison, but for our entire country,” Chief Barnes said during a press briefing.

Upon arrival, police found the shooter dead alongside a handgun. No officers fired their weapons, and the incident remained confined to one area of the school.

The shooting resulted in six injured students, two of whom remain in critical but stable condition. Four others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with two already released from the hospital. Police have not released the victims’ names.

Madison Fire Chief Chris Carbon said the scale of the emergency required 15 ambulances, with additional support from the FBI and other federal agencies.

“This has been a rough day for our city,” Chief Barnes added. Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever”.

The school, which serves 400 students from kindergarten through high school, had conducted active shooter drills earlier in the year. Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of relations, praised both staff and students for their swift response.

“They were clearly scared,” she said, but “when they heard ‘lockdown, lockdown,’ they knew it was real” and responded brilliantly.

Although the school has secure automatic locking doors and controlled entry points, it does not have a dedicated police officer, known as a school resource officer.

Authorities have yet to determine how the shooter obtained the firearm, and the motive remains unclear. Chief Barnes emphasised that the shooter’s family is cooperating with the investigation, and no prior police interactions with Rupnow have been reported.

Witnesses have been encouraged to speak with investigators, though police stress they will not pressure students to recount their experiences before they are ready.

The tragedy has reverberated across the nation, reigniting calls for action on gun violence. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers ordered state flags to fly at half-mast, urging prayers for the victims and their families. President Joe Biden called the shooting “shocking and unconscionable,” adding:

“Students across our country should be learning how to read and write—not having to learn how to duck and cover.”

Biden urged Congress to act on legislation to curb gun violence, a sentiment echoed widely as mass shootings remain an all-too-common occurrence in the United States.

The Alarming Reality of School Shootings
According to the K-12 Violence Project, there have been over 300 shootings on school grounds in 2024 alone. Of these, 38 incidents have resulted in deaths or injuries, highlighting the crisis of violence in American schools.

While most school shooters are teenage or young adult males, cases involving female perpetrators are exceptionally rare. David Riedman, founder of the K-12 School Shooting Database, notes that school shootings by female attackers date back to 1979, but remain isolated cases.

The Abundant Life Christian School remains closed as police continue their investigation. In a statement on social media, the school asked for prayers, writing:

“Please pray for our Challenger Family.”

As Madison mourns this tragic loss, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the growing need for safety in schools and stronger measures to address gun violence. For the families affected, the wounds of this day will take a long time to heal, but the spirit of a grieving community remains steadfast in support.
