Saving Pangolins, the World’s Most Trafficked Mammal, from Illegal Trade

Pangolins are scaled mammals found in African and Asian forests.

They have become increasingly well-known in recent years, because they are the most trafficked mammals in the world.

They are also now being linked to the outbreak of Covid-19, despite no scientific proof supporting this theory.

According to the African Pangolin Working Group, Nigerian ports are responsible for the export of about 70 per cent of pangolins poached from Africa and as recently as March 26, four thousand kilograms of pangolin scales worth over three billion Naira (about $7.8m) were seized in Cameroon, very close to the Nigerian border.

In this report, Arise Correspondent Laila Johnson-Salami finds out more about efforts to save the endangered mammals from the illegal wildlife trade.
