A South African mother has been arrested alongside two accomplices for allegedly attempting to sell her newborn twins, local media report.
She is alleged to be a drug addict and the attempted sale of the babies was in order to “satisfy her drug addiction”, Yolisa Mgolodela, a police spokesman, is quoted as saying.
He added: “The twins were admitted in hospital for medical attention as they were dehydrated and severely malnourished. They will be taken to a place of safety upon discharge. It is alleged that the prospective buyer was expected to pay R50 per day to the mother of the twins in order to satisfy her drug addiction.
“It is further reported that the alleged buyer was going to apply for a children’s grant and give a portion to the mother of the twins on a monthly basis.”
The five-day-old twin girls were taken to hospital as they were “dehydrated and severely malnourished”, the police said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court to answer charges of human trafficking on Monday.
