Rwandan Beauty Queen Divine Muheto Arrested For Alleged Drunk-Driving, License Violation

Rwandan beauty queen Divine Muheto, who won the Miss Rwanda title in 2022, has been arrested for drunk-driving and driving without a license.

According to police, Ms. Muheto damaged public infrastructure before fleeing the scene. Authorities did not disclose if there were injuries but noted it was not her first incident of driving under the influence.

Speculation surrounding her detention circulated for days before police confirmed the arrest on Tuesday. Ms. Muheto is scheduled to appear in court in Kigali on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for the prosecution.

Ms. Muheto rose to national prominence after her 2022 Miss Rwanda win. The annual beauty pageant has since been suspended by the government following sexual misconduct allegations against its organisers.

In Rwanda, drink-driving is punishable by a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs ($110) and five days in police custody. Law enforcement officials report that strict application of traffic laws has led to a significant decline in fatal road accidents, with thousands facing arrest for drunk-driving in recent years.
