Russian Embassy Denies Involvement in Northern Nigeria Protests, Cites Respect for Nigerian Sovereignty

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has officially denied any involvement in recent protests in the northern states of the country, where demonstrators have been seen carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a press statement released to the media, the Embassy addressed reports circulating in Nigerian media and digital platforms. “The Government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way,” the statement read.

The Embassy stressed Russia’s longstanding policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. “We emphasise that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria,” the statement continued, highlighting that the actions of the protesters are solely personal choices and not reflective of any official Russian stance.

The protests, which have captured significant media attention, see participants expressing dissatisfaction with local issues, yet choosing to display Russian symbols, an act the Embassy attributes to individual decisions rather than any organised effort. The statement reaffirmed Russia’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic processes. “We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with the Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy,” the Embassy stated.

However, the Russian Embassy expressed its stance against any potential violence stemming from these protests, saying, “Should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence, we strictly condemn them,” as it aligned with international diplomatic norms that advocate for peaceful and lawful expressions of dissent.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to the statement from the Russian Embassy.
